What is the Law, Policy, and Business Energy Conference?

This year Carlson Energy Club is teaming up to host the conference with the Law School’s Energy and Environmental Law Society and the Humphrey School’s Energy and Environmental Policy Club. The theme is the Midwest Energy Transition: Getting the Details Right, and will feature a single speaker from each of the business, law, and policy disciplines followed by a moderated discussion.

  • Business - Nicole Geneau, Strategy and Market Development Director, M. A. Mortenson Company
    • This session will focus on the deployment of renewable energy and battery storage, highlighting grid interactive buildings, fleet EV charging and tax equity investment. How do declining storage and renewable energy prices affect investments for businesses or buildings? What are common development pitfalls? How is Mortenson positioning itself to be a leader in the energy transition?
  • Law - Patrick Mahlberg, Shareholder, Fredrikson & Byron, P.A.
    • This session will provide an overview of the applicable law and relevant regulators for building electric transmission in the Midwest and will highlight issues impacting our transition to renewable sources of energy, including, but not limited to, different regulatory permitting schemes and the use of eminent domain to complete projects .
  • Policy - Laura Hannah, Senior Policy Associate, Energy Markets, Fresh Energy
    • This session will describe the MN PUC led process to update and streamline Minnesota’s interconnection standards. Who are the key stakeholders, what have the major challenges been, and why are interconnection standards so important for renewable energy deployment and grid modernization?
