Overview

Located in the center of Minneapolis, the current plant was built in 1882 on the site of early sawmills to power arc lights. A 1,900-foot-long, 14-foot-high dam, situated on the upper portion of St. Anthony Falls, creates a 450-acre reservoir. The St. Anthony Falls dam was replaced in 2000-2001 with a new dam around 30 feet upriver of the existing structure. The upper island was developed into a park with an access bridge giving public view of main spillway, horseshoe dam and downtown skyline. This plant is also known as St. Anthony Falls Hydro.
